Did You Know
De Soto County was created in 1887. It was named for Hernando de Soto, Spanish explorer, whose name was also honored in Hernando County. DeSoto County originally included several present day counties. In 1921 Florida legislation was passed to break up the size of the county. This produced the following counties: Charlotte, Hardee, Glades and Highlands. On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley went directly through DeSoto County. Even though hurricane force winds only lashed the county for about an hour, most buildings in the county sustained damage, and many were totally destroyed. (Wikipedia)
