Martin County was created in 1925. It was named for John W. Martin, Governor of Florida from 1925 to 1929. (Wikipedia) By the early part of the century, residents became upset over excessive taxes from Palm Beach County and following trips to Tallahassee to lobby Governor John Martin and other legislators; Martin County was formed on May 29, 1925. The Governor headed up a gala celebration in downtown Stuart for the new county named in his honor. Located in Florida's Treasure Coast, Martin County is the site of several shipwrecks from the 1700s when Spanish galleons carrying gold and silver doubloons and other treasures wrecked offshore in a hurricane. Other ships met the same fate over the years and in 1875, a U. S. Lifesaving Station was established on Hutchinson Island. It still stands today as Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge and is listed on the National Register for Preservation of Historic Places. (Stuart-Martin County Chamber of Commerce)
